Pearse was sworn into the secret Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB), committing to armed rebellion. This marked his shift from cultural to revolutionary nationalism.

After six days of fighting, Pearse issued an order to surrender to British forces to prevent further civilian casualties. He was arrested along with other leaders.

Pearse read the Proclamation of the Irish Republic outside the General Post Office in Dublin, declaring the establishment of a provisional government. He was the primary author of the document and served as President of the Provisional Government.

Pearse was executed by firing squad in Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin, along with fourteen other leaders of the Easter Rising. His execution transformed him into a martyr and galvanized support for Irish republicanism.
