Wang Chonggu was the chief Ming negotiator in the peace talks with Altan Khan. He successfully concluded a treaty that opened border markets and established a tributary relationship, ending decades of conflict.
Following the peace treaty, Wang Chonggu was appointed Minister of War. He continued to manage border affairs and maintain the fragile peace with the Mongols.
Wang Chonggu retired from government service after a long career. He was remembered for his diplomatic skills and his role in securing peace on the northern frontier.
Zhang Shijie commanded the Song naval forces at the Battle of Yamen against the Mongol fleet. He organized the Song ships into a defensive formation but was ultimately defeated by the Mongols' superior tactics and firepower.
During the Battle of Yamen, Zhang Shijie tried to rescue the child Emperor Bing after the Song fleet was broken. He failed to reach the emperor, who drowned with Lu Xiufu. Zhang Shijie then escaped the battle with a small remnant of the fleet.
After escaping the Battle of Yamen, Zhang Shijie attempted to regroup and continue resistance. However, his ship was caught in a storm and sank, drowning him. His death marked the final end of organized Song resistance against the Mongol Yuan dynasty.
