Zhang Yunyi

Zhang Yunyi co-led the Baise Uprising in Guangxi province, establishing the Seventh Red Army and the Youjiang Soviet. This rebellion against the Kuomintang created a communist base area in southern China, though it was later suppressed.

Zhang Yunyi served as commander of the New Fourth Army after the Wannan Incident. He led this communist force in guerrilla operations against the Japanese and Kuomintang in central China, maintaining the army's cohesion during a difficult period.

Zhang Yunyi was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the People's Liberation Army. He oversaw military planning and operations during the early years of the People's Republic, contributing to the modernization of the PLA.
