Center Force commander who turned back at Leyte Gulf.
Kurita commanded the Center Force, the main Japanese battleship group, at Leyte Gulf. His force included the super-battleships Yamato and Musashi. After losing Musashi to air attacks, Kurita turned his force back without attacking the US landing fleet.
Kurita's Center Force encountered the small US escort carrier group Taffy 3 off Samar. Despite having overwhelming firepower, Kurita ordered a withdrawal after losing three cruisers. The decision allowed the US landing force to remain unmolested and remains controversial.
Kurita commanded the Second Fleet, including battleships and cruisers, at the Battle of the Philippine Sea. His force was unable to engage effectively due to the overwhelming US air superiority and the destruction of Japanese carrier air groups.
