Seku Amadu

Seku Amadu established the Macina Caliphate after defeating the Bamana Empire at the Battle of Noukouma. He declared himself caliph and instituted a theocratic government based on Islamic law, creating a new political entity in the Niger River inland delta.

Seku Amadu's forces captured the city of Djenn

Seku Amadu implemented a comprehensive legal code based on Maliki school of Sunni Islam throughout the Macina Caliphate. This code governed all aspects of life, including taxation, marriage, and criminal justice, replacing traditional Bamana customary law.

Seku Amadu founded the city of Hamdullahi as the capital of the Macina Caliphate. The city was designed as a model Islamic settlement with a mosque, schools, and administrative buildings, becoming a center of religious scholarship and governance.
