Egyptian chief of staff in the 1973 war.
As Egyptian Chief of Staff, Shazly planned the crossing of the Suez Canal and the initial assault on the Bar-Lev Line. His operational plan achieved tactical surprise.
Shazly commanded the Egyptian crossing of the Suez Canal on October 6, 1973. The operation breached the Israeli Bar-Lev Line and established bridgeheads on the east bank.
Shazly opposed Sadat's decision to advance beyond the Sinai bridgeheads after the initial success. The disagreement led to Shazly's dismissal as Chief of Staff in December 1973.
Shazly was exiled after criticizing Sadat's peace policies. He lived in Algeria and later returned to Egypt after Sadat's assassination.
