Pomare IV

Pomare IV refused to accept the French protectorate imposed by Admiral Dupetit-Thouars, who had forced a treaty on Tahiti. She appealed to Britain and other powers for support, initiating a period of diplomatic resistance and tension with France that lasted for years.

Pomare IV's supporters, led by her husband and chiefs, launched a guerrilla war against French forces occupying Tahiti. The conflict lasted two years, with Tahitian fighters using the mountainous terrain to ambush French troops, but ultimately the French military superiority prevailed.

During the Franco-Tahitian War, Pomare IV fled Tahiti and took refuge on the neighboring island of Raiatea to avoid capture by French forces. She continued to direct resistance efforts from exile, maintaining her claim as the legitimate sovereign of Tahiti.

After military defeat and diplomatic isolation, Pomare IV formally accepted the French protectorate over Tahiti. She signed a convention that recognized French authority while allowing her to retain her title and some internal governance powers, ending active resistance.
