Orestes

Orestes was appointed magister militum by Emperor Julius Nepos. He later rebelled against Nepos, forcing him to flee to Dalmatia, and installed his own young son Romulus Augustulus as emperor.

Orestes deposed Emperor Julius Nepos and proclaimed his son Romulus Augustulus as Western Roman Emperor. Romulus was a child and Orestes ruled as the de facto power, but the usurpation was not recognized by the Eastern Empire.

Orestes was captured and executed by the Germanic general Odoacer, who led a revolt of barbarian mercenaries. Odoacer then deposed Romulus Augustulus, ending the Western Roman Empire and becoming the first King of Italy.
