Cousin of Husayn, his envoy to Kufa, first martyr of Karbala.
Compare Muslim ibn Aqil with another historical figure:
Muslim ibn Aqil was sent by Husayn ibn Ali to Kufa to assess support for a revolt against the Umayyad caliph Yazid I. He received pledges of allegiance from thousands of Kufans, reporting back to Husayn that conditions were favorable.
After the Umayyad governor Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad arrived in Kufa, he suppressed the pro-Alid movement. Muslim ibn Aqil was betrayed, captured, and executed, becoming the first martyr of the Battle of Karbala.
