Following international pressure, Djotodia was formally installed as transitional president by the National Transitional Council on August 18, 2013. His rule was characterized by widespread violence, including atrocities committed by Seleka fighters against Christian civilians, and a breakdown of state authority.
On January 10, 2014, Djotodia resigned as president at a summit of Central African leaders in N'Djamena, Chad. His resignation came after he failed to control Seleka fighters and stop the escalating sectarian violence between Muslim and Christian communities, which had led to thousands of deaths.
