Mbundu a Sanga

Mbundu a Sanga unified several Luba chiefdoms under his rule, establishing the Luba Empire in the Upemba Depression region of present-day DR Congo. He created a centralized political system with a sacred king (mulopwe) at its head, laying the foundation for Luba dominance in Central Africa.

Mbundu a Sanga institutionalized the position of mulopwe (sacred king) as the supreme political and spiritual authority. He introduced a court hierarchy, royal regalia, and a system of tribute collection that became the model for Luba governance for centuries.
