Condé won a decisive victory over the Spanish at Lens, capturing the Spanish commander and thousands of troops. This victory forced Spain to negotiate the Peace of Westphalia, ending the Thirty Years' War.

Condé led the aristocratic Fronde rebellion against the French crown, fighting royal forces in a civil war. He was defeated and forced into exile in Spain, where he served as a Spanish general against France.
