James Outram

Outram commanded a brigade at the Battle of the Alma during the Crimean War. The allied British and French forces defeated the Russian army, opening the way to the siege of Sevastopol.

Outram served as a divisional commander during the prolonged siege of Sevastopol in the Crimean War. He participated in the assault on the Redan fortification, which was repulsed with heavy British casualties.

Outram was appointed Resident of Lucknow, the British diplomatic representative to the Kingdom of Awadh. He was involved in the annexation of Awadh by the British East India Company, a decision that contributed to the Indian Rebellion.

Outram commanded the relief force that broke through rebel lines to reach the besieged British garrison at Lucknow during the Indian Rebellion. He then assumed command of the garrison and endured a second siege until final relief.
