Havelock served as a deputy assistant adjutant general at the Battle of Ferozeshah during the First Anglo-Sikh War. The British army defeated the Sikh Khalsa Army in a hard-fought engagement, securing British dominance in the Punjab.
Havelock led a small British force that fought through rebel-held territory to reach the besieged garrison at Lucknow. The relief was incomplete as the force was too weak to evacuate the garrison, leading to a second siege.
Havelock's force defeated rebel forces at Cawnpore, recapturing the city after the massacre of British prisoners. The victory allowed him to continue his advance toward Lucknow.
Havelock died of dysentery shortly after the final relief of Lucknow. His death occurred days after learning of his promotion to Major General and baronetcy, making him a celebrated British hero of the rebellion.
