François Bozizé led a rebellion that captured Bangui, overthrowing President Ange-Félix Patassé while he was abroad. Bozizé suspended the constitution and installed himself as president, beginning a decade of rule.
Bozizé won the presidential election held under a new constitution, receiving 64.6% of the vote in the second round. The election was intended to restore constitutional order after his 2003 coup.
