Progressive general and regent, peacemaker of Bergara.
Espartero led a daring night crossing of the Nervi
Espartero, as commander of the liberal forces, negotiated the Convention of Vergara with the Carlist general Maroto. The agreement ended the First Carlist War by integrating Carlist officers into the liberal army and respecting Basque fueros.
After the resignation of Queen Maria Christina, Espartero was appointed Regent of Spain. He ruled as regent until 1843, implementing progressive reforms but facing opposition from moderates and military revolts.
