Andre Rigaud

André Rigaud emerged as the leader of the free people of color (mulattoes) in southern Saint-Domingue during the Haitian Revolution. He commanded a well-organized army that controlled the southern peninsula, fighting against both white colonists and later against Toussaint Breda's forces for political dominance.

Rigaud led the mulatto forces in the War of Knives (1799-1800), a brutal civil war against Toussaint Breda's predominantly black army. The conflict was marked by atrocities on both sides. Rigaud was defeated by Toussaint's forces in 1800 and forced into exile in France, ending his control over southern Saint-Domingue.

Rigaud returned to Saint-Domingue in 1802 as part of the French expeditionary force under General Charles Leclerc, sent by Napoleon to restore French control and slavery. He fought alongside the French against Toussaint's forces, but later switched sides to support the Haitian independence movement after the French betrayed him.
