Genghis Khan created the Yam, a network of relay stations and messengers across the empire. This system facilitated rapid communication, troop movement, and trade, becoming a model for later empires and enhancing administrative control.
Temüjin defeated and united the warring Mongol and Tatar tribes under his leadership at a kurultai (assembly) on the Onon River. He was proclaimed Genghis Khan (Universal Ruler), founding the Mongol Empire and establishing a unified legal code, the Yassa.
Genghis Khan launched a campaign against the Western Xia (Tangut) kingdom, forcing its submission after a siege of its capital. This conquest provided resources and a strategic base for further expansion into China and Central Asia.
After a trade caravan was massacred by the Khwarezmian Shah, Genghis Khan invaded the Khwarezmian Empire with a massive army. He destroyed cities like Samarkand and Bukhara, and the empire collapsed, extending Mongol rule into Persia.
Genghis Khan's forces pursued and defeated the Khwarezmian prince Jalal al-Din at the Indus River. Jalal al-Din escaped into India, but the battle marked the end of organized resistance in the region and secured Mongol control over Central Asia.
Suleiman personally led a massive Ottoman campaign against the Knights Hospitaller on Rhodes. After a six-month siege, the knights surrendered and were allowed to leave. This victory secured Ottoman control over the eastern Mediterranean.
Suleiman's Ottoman army defeated the Hungarian forces of King Louis II at Moh
Suleiman besieged Vienna, the Habsburg capital, with a large army. The siege failed due to supply issues, disease, and strong defenses. This defeat halted Ottoman expansion into central Europe and marked the empire's furthest advance westward.
Suleiman oversaw the compilation and standardization of Ottoman legal codes, known as Kanun. These laws regulated criminal justice, land tenure, and taxation, creating a unified legal system that balanced sharia with secular law. He earned the title 'Kanuni' (the Lawgiver).
Suleiman ordered the execution of his grand vizier and close friend Ibrahim Pasha, who had served for 13 years. The reasons remain debated, but likely involved Ibrahim's growing power and conflicts with Suleiman's wife, Hurrem Sultan. This event demonstrated the absolute power of the sultan.
Each figure is scored on 6 dimensions (0—100 scale) based on structured historical data: Military (10%), Political (20%), Influence (20%), Legacy (20%), Leadership (15%), Strategy (15%). The weighted total produces the final ranking.
Scores are computed from structured sub-indicators in the database. Scale factors adjust for era (Ancient ×0.85, Modern ×1.0) and civilization size (Eastern ×1.05, Other ×0.80) to account for differences in population and military scale.
Comparisons are limited to 2—3 figures to ensure readability and statistical meaningfulness.
±5 points per dimension — Sub-scores are derived from historical records with inherent uncertainty. Two figures within 5 points on a dimension should be considered roughly equivalent in that area.
±3 points overall — The weighted combination of 6 dimensions produces a total score with approximately ±3 points of uncertainty. Differences of less than 3 points are not statistically significant— the figures are effectively tied.
Okay so I just finished reading Dan Carlin's Hardcore History on the Mongols and wow — Genghis totally deserves that 98. The guy took an army that lived on horseback and basically invented modern combined-arms warfare 800 years early. Suleiman was impressive too, but he inherited the Janissaries and the Ottoman bureaucratic machine. Genghis built everything from scratch with goat herders. It's like comparing a startup founder to a CEO who took over a successful company. Both great, but one did it the hard way.
Genghis Khan absolutely SMOKES Suleiman here and it's not even close. 98 vs 85 in military? Should be 99 vs 80! Suleiman was good — Rhodes, Mohács, Baghdad — but he was fighting in a world where gunpowder already existed. Genghis revolutionized warfare from scratch. He took steppe nomads and made them the most lethal force on Earth, conquering more land in 20 years than Rome did in 400. And that influence score? The Pax Mongolica connected China to Europe. Suleiman's pretty mosques don't compare. Period.
