Vyacheslav Chornovil

Chornovil was arrested and sentenced to prison for distributing samizdat literature and criticizing the Soviet regime. His imprisonment made him a prominent figure in the Ukrainian dissident movement.

Chornovil compiled and smuggled out of the USSR a collection of documents detailing Soviet human rights abuses, known as 'The Chornovil Papers'. The publication brought international attention to the Ukrainian dissident movement.

Chornovil was elected to the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) in the first partially free elections. He became a leading figure in the democratic opposition and a key advocate for Ukrainian independence.

Chornovil died in a car crash on a highway near Kyiv. The circumstances of the accident were widely questioned, with many suspecting political assassination due to his role as a leading opposition figure.
