Film star politician killed by JVP.
Kumaratunga was a leading actor and producer in Sinhala cinema, starring in popular films such as 'Hanthane Kathawa' and 'Senasuma Kothena'. His film career made him a household name and gave him a platform to enter politics, blending entertainment with political activism.
Kumaratunga was elected to the Sri Lankan Parliament in the 1977 general election as a member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). He represented the Gampaha District and quickly became a prominent figure in the opposition.
Kumaratunga founded the Sri Lanka Mahajana Party (SLMP) as a centrist political alternative. The party aimed to bridge ethnic divides and promote a moderate, socialist-oriented agenda. It attracted support from both Sinhalese and Tamil communities.
Kumaratunga was shot and killed outside his home in Colombo by members of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). The assassination was part of the JVP's campaign against moderate politicians during the second JVP insurrection. His death shocked the nation and led to widespread mourning.
