Uddhav Thackeray

Thackeray became Chief Minister of Maharashtra in November 2019, leading the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition of Shiv Sena, NCP, and Congress. He was the first member of the Thackeray family to hold the office, marking a shift from his father Bal Thackeray's non-political role.

Thackeray's government implemented lockdowns and public health measures during the COVID-19 pandemic in Maharashtra, the state worst hit in India. His administration faced criticism for economic disruption but was credited with early containment efforts.

Thackeray resigned as Chief Minister in June 2022 after a rebellion by Shiv Sena MLA Eknath Shinde led to the collapse of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government. His resignation marked the end of his 2.5-year tenure and a major political crisis for his party.

The Election Commission of India recognized the Shinde faction as the real Shiv Sena in February 2023, awarding it the party's symbol. Thackeray's faction was reduced to a minority, significantly weakening his political influence.
