Tommy Remengesau Jr

Tommy Remengesau Jr. was elected as the President of Palau, beginning his first term. He succeeded Kuniwo Nakamura and focused on economic development, environmental protection, and strengthening ties with the United States under the Compact of Free Association.

Remengesau was re-elected as President of Palau after a four-year hiatus, defeating incumbent Johnson Toribiong. His return to office signaled continued support for his environmental and economic policies, including the marine sanctuary initiative.

President Remengesau signed into law the creation of the Palau National Marine Sanctuary, designating 80% of Palau's exclusive economic zone as a no-take marine reserve. This was one of the largest fully protected ocean areas in the world, aimed at preserving marine biodiversity and supporting sustainable fisheries.
