Portia Simpson-Miller

Simpson-Miller succeeded P.J. Patterson as Prime Minister, becoming the first woman to hold the office in Jamaica. Her appointment was a milestone for gender equality in Caribbean politics.

Simpson-Miller's PNP was narrowly defeated by Andrew Holness's JLP in the 2007 general election. The loss was attributed to internal party divisions and public dissatisfaction with crime and economic issues.

Simpson-Miller led the PNP to a landslide victory in the 2011 general election, returning to power. Her second term focused on social programs and economic recovery, but was marred by high debt and crime.

Simpson-Miller's PNP was defeated by Andrew Holness's JLP in the 2016 general election. The loss ended her second term and marked a return to JLP rule.
