Tanzanian independence leader who broke with Nyerere.
Oscar Kambona was a key leader in the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU), working alongside Julius Nyerere to mobilize support for independence. He served as TANU's secretary-general and was a prominent figure in the independence struggle.
After Tanganyika's independence, Kambona was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, serving from 1961 to 1965. He represented the new nation internationally and helped shape its foreign policy.
Kambona fell out with President Nyerere over ideological differences and accusations of plotting a coup. He fled to London, where he lived in exile for decades, becoming a vocal critic of Nyerere's government.
After years in exile, Kambona returned to Tanzania following political liberalization. He was welcomed back but did not regain a prominent political role, remaining a historical figure of the independence era.
