Jorge Serrano Elias

Serrano Elias won the 1990 presidential election as the candidate of the Solidarity Action Movement, becoming the first evangelical Protestant president in Latin America.

Serrano dissolved Congress, suspended the constitution, and dismissed the Supreme Court, attempting to consolidate power. The move was condemned internationally and by domestic institutions.

Facing massive protests, military pressure, and international isolation, Serrano resigned and fled to Panama. His self-coup collapsed after just nine days, leading to a constitutional succession.
