COVID-denying populist Tanzanian president.
John Magufuli was appointed Minister of Works by President Benjamin Mkapa. He oversaw infrastructure projects, including road construction, earning a reputation for efficiency and anti-corruption.
Magufuli was elected President of Tanzania on the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) ticket. He campaigned on an anti-corruption platform and took office on November 5, 2015.
Magufuli denied the severity of COVID-19, rejecting vaccines and promoting unproven remedies. He declared Tanzania COVID-free in June 2020, leading to underreporting and a lack of public health measures.
Magufuli died on March 17, 2021, at age 61. The official cause was heart disease, but many suspected COVID-19. His death ended his presidency and led to Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan succeeding him.
