David Akinwande

David Akinwande was a founding member of the Nigerian Youth Movement (NYM), one of the first nationalist organizations in Nigeria. The NYM campaigned for greater African representation in the colonial government and laid the groundwork for the independence movement.

David Akinwande was elected to the Lagos Town Council, becoming one of the first Nigerians to hold a significant elective office under colonial rule. This position allowed him to advocate for local improvements and African interests within the colonial system.

David Akinwande was a key figure in founding the Nigerian National Democratic Party (NNDP), a major political party in Lagos. The NNDP contested elections and pushed for gradual constitutional reform, representing the interests of the Lagos elite.

David Akinwande was a vocal opponent of the Richards Constitution, which he and other nationalists saw as a step backward for Nigerian unity. He argued that the constitution's regionalization would entrench ethnic divisions and delay self-government.
