Amien Rais

Amien Rais was elected chairman of Muhammadiyah, Indonesia's second-largest Islamic organization. He used the position to advocate for democratic reforms and social justice.

Rais was a leading figure in the Reformasi movement that demanded Soeharto's resignation. He organized mass protests and became a symbol of the democratic transition.

Rais founded the National Mandate Party (PAN) as a vehicle for reformist politics. The party became a major force in post-Soeharto Indonesia.
