Alfonso Lopez Michelsen

López Michelsen enacted a comprehensive tax reform that simplified the tax system, broadened the tax base, and increased government revenue. The reform aimed to reduce fiscal deficits and improve public finances.

Alfonso López Michelsen became President of Colombia in 1974 as the first elected under competitive elections after the National Front. His administration faced severe economic challenges including inflation and fiscal deficits.

López Michelsen implemented austerity measures including devaluation, spending cuts, and tax increases to address a balance of payments crisis. The measures stabilized the economy but caused social unrest and reduced his popularity.

López Michelsen established Colciencias, the national science and technology institute, to promote research and innovation. The institution became a key driver of scientific development in Colombia.
