Magnentius, a Roman general of barbarian origin, was proclaimed emperor by his troops in Gaul. He led a coup against Emperor Constans, who was killed while fleeing. This act divided the Roman Empire between Magnentius in the West and Constantius II in the East.
Magnentius fought a major battle against Constantius II at Mursa (modern Osijek, Croatia). The battle was one of the bloodiest in Roman history, with heavy losses on both sides. Magnentius was defeated, weakening his position and leading to his eventual downfall.
After retreating to Gaul, Magnentius was decisively defeated by Constantius II's forces at Mons Seleucus in southeastern Gaul. This defeat ended his rebellion. Magnentius fled to Lugdunum (Lyon) and committed suicide.
Napoleon Bonaparte, with support from his brother Lucien and key political figures, overthrew the Directory in a bloodless coup. He established the Consulate with himself as First Consul, effectively becoming the ruler of France. This event ended the French Revolution's most unstable period.
Napoleon enacted the Civil Code of the French, known as the Napoleonic Code, a comprehensive set of laws that replaced the fragmented feudal legal systems. The code established legal equality, protected property rights, and secularized law. It became the basis for legal systems in many European and world countries.

Each figure is scored on 6 dimensions (0—100 scale) based on structured historical data: Military (10%), Political (20%), Influence (20%), Legacy (20%), Leadership (15%), Strategy (15%). The weighted total produces the final ranking.
Scores are computed from structured sub-indicators in the database. Scale factors adjust for era (Ancient ×0.85, Modern ×1.0) and civilization size (Eastern ×1.05, Other ×0.80) to account for differences in population and military scale.
Comparisons are limited to 2—3 figures to ensure readability and statistical meaningfulness.
±5 points per dimension — Sub-scores are derived from historical records with inherent uncertainty. Two figures within 5 points on a dimension should be considered roughly equivalent in that area.
±3 points overall — The weighted combination of 6 dimensions produces a total score with approximately ±3 points of uncertainty. Differences of less than 3 points are not statistically significant— the figures are effectively tied.
Napoleon vs Magnentius? One reshaped Europe’s legal and political map; the other was a general who got lucky before being crushed. Waterloo echoes through history because Napoleon fought coalitions, not a single emperor. Magnentius lost at Mursa Major in 351—one of the bloodiest Roman battles—and never recovered. Comparing them ignores scale and legacy. Napoleon’s a titan; Magnentius is a trivia answer.
Classics perspective: Magnentius ruled only three years before Constantius II’s gold-backed diplomacy and battlefield skill dismantled him. Napoleon had 1812, 1813, 1814, 1815—four catastrophic campaigns—yet still elevated France forever. Magnentius’s defeat at Mons Seleucus sealed his obscurity. One founded a dynasty of memory; the other’s name appears only in Ammianus Marcellinus’s footnotes. That’s not a comparison; that’s a lesson in survival.
Both seized power from weak rulers—Napoleon from the Directory, Magnentius from Constans. But Constans was a cruel, incompetent tyrant, while the Directory was a corrupt mess. Yet Magnentius’s usurpation sparked a civil war that killed Roman manpower; Napoleon’s consolidation actually modernized France. One was a parasite on a dying empire; the other was a parasite that reshaped its host. Excuses won’t change that.
