Gao Huan defeated the Erzhu clan at the Battle of Shanyin, ending their dominance over the Northern Wei court. This victory allowed him to install Emperor Xiaowu as a puppet ruler and become the de facto ruler of northern China.
After a split with Emperor Xiaowu, Gao Huan established the Eastern Wei Dynasty with Emperor Xiaojing as a puppet ruler. He controlled the eastern half of northern China from his capital at Yecheng, ruling as de facto dictator until his death.
Gao Huan died from illness at age 51. His sons Gao Cheng and Gao Yang succeeded him, with Gao Yang later founding the Northern Qi Dynasty, fulfilling Gao Huan's ambition of establishing a new ruling house.
Napoleon Bonaparte, with support from his brother Lucien and key political figures, overthrew the Directory in a bloodless coup. He established the Consulate with himself as First Consul, effectively becoming the ruler of France. This event ended the French Revolution's most unstable period.
Napoleon enacted the Civil Code of the French, known as the Napoleonic Code, a comprehensive set of laws that replaced the fragmented feudal legal systems. The code established legal equality, protected property rights, and secularized law. It became the basis for legal systems in many European and world countries.

Each figure is scored on 6 dimensions (0—100 scale) based on structured historical data: Military (10%), Political (20%), Influence (20%), Legacy (20%), Leadership (15%), Strategy (15%). The weighted total produces the final ranking.
Scores are computed from structured sub-indicators in the database. Scale factors adjust for era (Ancient ×0.85, Modern ×1.0) and civilization size (Eastern ×1.05, Other ×0.80) to account for differences in population and military scale.
Comparisons are limited to 2—3 figures to ensure readability and statistical meaningfulness.
±5 points per dimension — Sub-scores are derived from historical records with inherent uncertainty. Two figures within 5 points on a dimension should be considered roughly equivalent in that area.
±3 points overall — The weighted combination of 6 dimensions produces a total score with approximately ±3 points of uncertainty. Differences of less than 3 points are not statistically significant— the figures are effectively tied.
Napoleon was a revolutionary meteor, not a dynastic builder. He crowned himself in Notre Dame because he had to invent his own legitimacy, whereas Gao Huan worked the levers of an existing imperial system. Napoleon’s exile on St. Helena wasn’t just bad luck—it was the logical end of betting everything on personal glory. Gao Huan died in bed because he understood that real power doesn’t need a crown; it needs heirs and alliances. Napoleon gave France an empire; Gao Huan gave his son a dynasty.
Everyone ignores the islander mindset. Corsica taught Napoleon that an occupying power could be beaten, that an outsider could rise. He was always playing to prove himself, which made him brilliant but reckless. Gao Huan grew up among border garrison clans where power was collective, not individual. He didn’t need to snatch a crown—his people already knew who gave orders. Napoleon’s tragedy was that he never stopped being the Corsican outsider trying to force respect.
